전시소개

《소장품 방랑》展은 제주현대미술관이 2017년부터 2020년 전반기까지 수집한 작품을 2년 만에 선보이는 신소장품전이다. 회화, 조각, 판화, 사진, 영상 등 총 40점의 작품이 전시되는 이번 전시는 최근 4년 동안 외부 공고와 내부 추천의 방식을 병행한 수집의 결과물이다. 전시를 통해 만날 수 있는 신소장품들은 개성이 뚜렷한 작가, 다양한 장르를 아우르고 있어 폭넓고 다채로운 미술 세계로 안내할 것이다.

전시의 콘셉트는 제목에서 드러나듯 ‘방랑’이다. ‘정한 곳 없이 이리저리 떠돌아다님’을 뜻하는 ‘방랑’의 사전적 의미는 ‘홀로’의 가치에 집중하고자 하는 이번 전시의 방향과 맞닿아 있다. ‘코로나 19’라는 예상치 못했던 감염병 대유행으로 인해 ‘사회적 거리두기’와 ‘비대면’이 일상화되면서 많은 문화예술 활동이 위축되었지만, 능동적인 인류는 이러한 제약을 ‘자신’에게 집중하고 ‘당연한 것들’을 돌아보는 계기로 만들어 포스트 코로나를 대비하고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서《소장품 방랑》展 역시 관람자가 작품 앞에 ‘홀로’ 서서 차분히 ‘작품과 마주한 자신’에게 집중할 수 있는 자리를 마련함으로써 미술 향유의 본질을 되돌아보고자 기획되었다.

방랑의 정서는 역사적으로 음악, 미술, 소설 등 장르를 불문하고 낭만주의 예술에서 중요한 예술적 모티브가 되었다. 낭만주의 예술가들은 바로 직전 세상을 풍미했던 고전주의 예술에서 절대성으로 이야기되는 규범과 이성의 가치 영역 외의 것들에 관심을 두고 인간의 내면과 감정의 본질을 강조하며 나타났다. 이번 전시작품들이 직접적으로 낭만주의 미학이나 방랑의 정서를 함의하는 것은 아니지만, 인간의 본질과 역사적 사실, 그리고 우리가 살아가는 현실을 폭넓게 품고 있다는 점에서, 전시를 통해 현재적 삶의 의미를 새로운 시각으로 질문하고 그 답을 찾을 수 있는 의미 있는 시간을 갖고자 한다.

세 개의 공간에서 선보이는 이번 전시에서는 거대한 자연의 근원적 에너지와 신비로움에 대한 통찰, 자연의 환경적 가치, 인간 삶의 유한함, ‘제주’라는 장소성을 중심으로 역사, 문화, 생활 등에서 시간을 관통하는 제주 삶의 본질적 이야기 등 현대를 살아가는 사람들의 다양한 초상과 그들의 살아있는 의식을 마주할 수 있다.

동시대, 그리고 현실의 삶에 근거한 자연, 현상, 사회를 바라보는 작가들의 고유의 시각은 전시 안에서 크고 작은 변주를 일으키거나 뜻밖에 서로를 비추며 하나의 이야기로 연결되는 조응의 지점을 만들어내기도 한다. 그 속에서 우리 모두가 크고 작게 연결된 존재라는 사실을 새롭게 환기하는 특별한 경험을 할 수 있을 것이다. 이번 전시와 함께 하는 방랑의 여정을 통해 조금은 내쉬고, 조금은 버리고, 한편으로는 또 다른 것을 채워가며 약간의 위안과 자유로움, 삶의 에너지를 얻을 수 있는 자리가 되길 바란다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The 《Wandering in Art》exhibition is being held to introduce the new collections of Jeju Museum of Art from 2017 to early 2020. Following public notices and internal recommendations over the past 4 years, 40 collected works including paintings, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and video are displayed for this exhibition. The works introduced through this exhibition embrace various genres from distinct idiosyncratic artists, which will lead visitors into an extensive and multifarious art world.

As evident in the title, the concept of this exhibition is ‘wandering’. The lexical meaning of the word ‘wandering’ matches the aim of this exhibition which focuses on the value of being ‘alone.’ As ‘social distancing’ and ‘untact' become normalized due to the unprecedented ‘COVID-19’ pandemic, cultural and artistic activities have dwindled; however, conative humankind is preparing for post-corona by concentrating on ‘oneself’ through such restrictions and taking the chance to search for that which is 'taken for granted.’ In this context, the 《Wandering in Art》exhibition aims to provide viewers with an opportunity to concentrate on ‘themselves, standing alone and encountering the works’ by which they can reflect on the nature of art appreciation.

Historically, the sentiment of wandering has been an important artistic motif in romanticism regardless of genre including music, art, literature, and more. Romanticists emerged as they emphasized the inner emotions of humans by showing interest in things other than the value of norms and rationality which were considered absolute in the classic art that was fashionable in previous times. Though the works for this exhibition don’t directly imply romantic aesthetics or the sentiment of wandering, we aim to provide a meaningful time for visitors to explore the meaning of life today from a new perspective and seek answers to such questions as the works intensively cover human nature, historical facts, and the present time in which we live.

The works are exhibited in three spaces, and visitors can encounter various portraits of contemporary people and their living consciousness through the works, which provide insight on the original energy of expansive nature and its mystique; the environmental value of nature; the finiteness of human life; and the innate story of Jeju life through time in history, culture, and living with the placeness of ‘Jeju’ as its center.

The inherent perspectives of the artists on contemporary time, nature, and social phenomena play big or small variations within the exhibition, reflect on each other unexpectedly, and create a point of being in harmony that connects as one story. Visitors will have a special experience to newly realize that we are beings connecting to each other whether big or small. Hopefully, through the journey of wandering through the exhibition, visitors will obtain some comfort, freedom, and the energy of life by breathing out a little, throwing out a little, and, on the other hand, filling themselves up with other things.
